Atomic Cake Still Makes A Splash, 70 Years After Its Debut

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Atomic Cake, created by George Kremm in the 1950s, features layers of banana, chocolate, and vanilla cake and has become a Chicago culinary icon. Pastry chef Carla Henriques has developed a modern interpretation of this classic, introducing the Atomic Sundae at Hawksmoor Chicago. This 13-layer dessert incorporates roasted banana ice cream and vanilla custard, enhancing the original flavors of the cake. Priced at $20, the sundae quickly gained popularity, prompting its permanent addition to the menu. Customers have begun flocking to the restaurant specifically for this dessert, with some returning regularly.

Henriques expressed her joy in sharing the sundae, which has already inspired a young girl to recreate it at home. The sundae serves as a delightful way to experience the iconic flavors of the Atomic Cake. The original cake remains available at bakeries across Chicago’s South Side, maintaining its relevance 70 years after its debut.
