Kids Can Play In Nature While Surrounded By Art At This South Shore Community Garden
The LUV Institute launched its first nature playscape at the Crandon Community Garden, a project designed to promote outdoor engagement for neighborhood children. The playscape features an activity hut, enhancements to the existing pergola, and art crafted from sustainable materials by local artists, including murals and stepping stones created by local youth. Executive Director Cosette Nazon-Wilburn highlighted the role of green spaces in lowering stress levels and fostering community bonds across generations. Funded by a grant from the Wayfarer Foundation, this initiative aims to create five playscapes throughout Chicago, building on the success of the "Parade of Hearts" project initiated in 2021. The LUV Institute seeks suggestions for additional sites, focusing on vacant land, urban gardens, and schools with natural areas.
A second playscape is already planned for the West Side. Community leaders interested in collaborating with the LUV Institute can reach out for more information. This initiative reflects a commitment to restorative justice and enhancing community well-being through accessible art and play.
