South Shore Family Dollars Roof Caves In, Then Man Burglarizes Store, Officials Say

Chicago, ILLocal News

A Family Dollar store in South Shore is closed indefinitely following a roof collapse that occurred early Monday morning. According to buildings department officials, the bow truss collapse was unexpected, and no injuries were reported. Investigators are currently assessing the structural damage, with no previous citations on record for the property. That same night, a man broke into the store, stealing items after smashing the front glass door. Police are currently investigating the burglary, and no suspects are in custody.

The store will remain closed until the owner secures a valid permit for necessary structural repairs. City inspections data reveal no roof-related issues for nearly two decades, although inspectors noted water damage in 2009. Other Family Dollar locations in the area are still open for business.
