Chicago School Board Members Divided Over Districts 2026 Budget Proposal

Chicago, ILLocal News

Chicago school board members debated a contentious $10. 2 billion budget proposal for the 2025-26 school year, presented by Interim CEO Macquline King. The budget, which reflects a $734 million deficit, notably omits a $175 million pension payment to the city. Critics, primarily those appointed by the mayor, warned that this decision could alienate city officials and endanger future funding opportunities. In contrast, other members praised the balanced nature of the budget, which avoids staff cuts and furloughs.

The proposal projects $379 million from uncertain TIF surplus dollars, highlighting the city’s financial challenges. Additionally, the budget reflects $272 million in cuts across various services, prompting protests from affected custodians. The district will hold public forums for feedback before the board votes on the budget on August 28. Previous CEO Pedro Martinez was ousted partly due to budgetary decisions, underscoring the importance of the current proposal.
