Greater Grand Crossing Youth Center Gets 250,000 Grant To Expand Urban Farming Program
The Gary Comer Youth Center in Greater Grand Crossing received a $250,000 grant to expand its Food Sovereignty Hub, enhancing urban agriculture education. Mayor Brandon Johnson announced the funding, which will enable the center to build a greenhouse, outdoor kitchen classroom, and a commercial space for Farmers Markets. Amanda Anderson, the associate director, noted that the hub will support the largest youth-run farm in Chicago, where over 160 young people work annually. The initiative aims to improve food production and provide students with hands-on experience in growing and marketing produce. Johnson emphasized the significance of local farming initiatives as federal food assistance programs face cuts.
The hub is expected to increase local fresh food production by six to eight tons. Students will also gain entrepreneurial skills by operating the hub's market, extending the Farmers Market season. The grand opening is set for September 25, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and Harvest Dinner planned.
