Can EV Ambassadors In Bronzeville Help Chicago Drivers Go Electric?

Chicago, ILLocal News

Illinois targets 1 million electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030, contingent on Chicago residents embracing the shift. EV ambassadors like William Davis collaborate with ComEd to educate the community about the advantages of EVs and provide information on available incentives. ComEd's Beneficial Electrification plan, approved for 2026-2028, commits $168 million to promote EVs, contributing to a total of $400 million dedicated to the initiative from 2023 to 2028. The program prioritizes areas designated as “equity investment eligible communities” that have faced economic exclusion and high pollution levels. Davis's organization is installing two EV chargers and has acquired an electric van through city grants.

Fellow ambassador Nicole Wheatly, who recently purchased an EV, highlights the cost benefits of electric vehicles and uses her real estate career to spread awareness. The ambassador program, launched this summer, aims to deepen the plan's impact in historically marginalized neighborhoods like Bronzeville. By connecting residents to EV incentives, the initiative strives to enhance mobility and combat pollution in these communities.
