Jaqueza Thomas, a political science junior at the University of Illinois Chicago, is hosting a significant back-to-school bash at Nat King Cole Park this Saturday, where over 1,000 free backpacks filled with school supplies will be distributed. Attendees can also benefit from free haircuts, hygiene kits, food, and various fun activities like bounce houses and rock climbing. This year, the event will introduce a work and wellness fair aimed at helping youth and young adults aged 16-24 find job opportunities through on-site interviews and resume coaching. Originally funded by his personal savings, Thomas has transformed the initiative into a nonprofit called Chicago Emerging Stars, which has garnered sponsorships to expand its reach. The celebration is expected to serve at least 2,000 people, with local leaders, including Mayor Brandon Johnson, anticipated to attend.

Thomas highlights the role of mentorship in his life, stating that support from figures like former principal Stephen Parker inspired him to serve Chicago's youth. Chicago Emerging Stars is also planning to launch monthly mentorship programs in local schools this school year. The nonprofit aims to empower young people to support each other and cultivate future leaders through a youth advisory board.
