Chicago, ILLocal News

Danielle Wasserman, a 37-year-old woman from Pilsen, is charged with felony hate crimes related to the assault of two neighbors and the vandalism of a pro-Palestinian mural. The mural, painted by Palestinian artist Taqi Spateen, features Palestinian and Mexican men in a peace garden. On May 9, Wasserman was seen dumping trash near the mural and assaulted a neighbor who attempted to record her actions. In a separate incident on June 13, she attacked another neighbor while painting a message about Israel on the mural. Witnesses captured the assaults on video, which played a crucial role in the police investigation.

Wasserman turned herself in following community advocacy for her arrest. Human rights lawyer Farah Chalisa stated that this case represents a step toward justice for victims of violence against marginalized communities. The incidents reflect broader societal tensions regarding pro-Palestinian expressions and the safety of those who support them.
