There Is Not A Man Trapped Inside The Bean, So Please Stop Calling The Downtown Alderman

Chicago, ILLocal News

A viral prank falsely claims a man is trapped inside Chicago's Cloud Gate sculpture, known as The Bean, capturing significant social media attention. The hoax began on July 31 when a group of demonstrators gathered, holding signs that called for the man's release. Alderman Brendan Reilly confirmed no one has been trapped inside the sculpture for 21 years, yet his office has been inundated with inquiries from confused residents. Recent college graduate Marisol Nuñez recorded one of the videos, which has garnered over 300,000 likes, expressing her surprise at its popularity. The Man in Bean Coalition, behind the prank, has attracted over 27,000 followers on Instagram.

Some view the prank as a commentary on journalism, highlighting how easily misinformation can spread. Rob Adler, a DePaul University professor, noted that the demonstration could serve as a reminder of the importance of truth in media. The coalition has chosen not to reveal its members, emphasizing their collective mission over individual identities.
