Century-Old Greystone In Lakeview To Be Demolished, But Neighbors Are Fighting To Save It
Residents on the 1300 block of West Newport Avenue in Lakeview are mobilizing against the planned demolition of a century-old greystone, fearing it will disrupt the area's historical character. PLD Homes has been granted a demolition permit to replace the structure with a modern two-flat, igniting community concern. Neighbors expressed their desire to preserve the building’s facade in a letter sent to the developer, emphasizing the architectural consistency of the block. They are willing to cover redesign costs to help maintain the historic character. Ward Miller of Preservation Chicago noted that such situations reflect a wider preservation crisis in the city, where historic buildings face increasing threats.
The block features a collection of intact three-flats, showcasing high-quality residential architecture from 1891 to 1928. While the community supports new housing developments, they advocate for preservation methods that retain neighborhood identity. Preservationists argue that landmarking can stabilize neighborhoods and protect their character, a sentiment echoed by local residents.
