Part Of DuSable Lake Shore Could Move Underground If City Extends Grant Park To Lakefront

Chicago, ILLocal News

Chicago's Park District unveiled a plan to extend Grant Park to the lakefront, proposing to route DuSable Lake Shore Drive underground. This ambitious project includes a “deck-over” that would allow safe pedestrian and cyclist access from Buckingham Fountain to the lakefront. However, funding remains a significant challenge, and city officials acknowledge the costly nature of the proposals. The updated framework, the first since 2002, prioritizes public safety and mobility, aiming to reduce traffic conflicts at critical crossings. Leslie Recht, president of the Grant Park Advisory Council, expressed concerns about the tunnel’s feasibility but found some proposals encouraging, such as adding public restrooms and concession stands.

Community engagement will continue to shape the plan, which seeks to finalize a comprehensive document by year-end. The initiative responds to public safety concerns highlighted by recent accidents involving pedestrians and cyclists. Overall, the plan reflects a long-term vision for improving one of Chicago's most iconic public spaces.
