This New Wild Mile Art Piece Is Made For Humans And Wildlife Along The Chicago River

Chicago, ILLocal News

The new bench “Two Sanctuaries” on the Chicago River offers a dual-purpose space for humans and wildlife. Designed by artist Erik Peterson, the structure integrates natural wood to foster aquatic habitats while providing a comfortable resting spot for visitors. Urban Rivers, a nonprofit focused on ecological restoration, partnered with the city to enhance the Wild Mile, a project aimed at connecting communities with nature. Operations manager Maya Kelly highlighted the organization's commitment to wildlife-focused art installations. Peterson, with 20 years of experience and a background in ecological themes, found the project fulfilling.

He hopes that the joy he experienced while creating the bench resonates with visitors. The bench has already drawn families and wildlife, indicating early success in its dual functionality. The initiative aligns with Urban Rivers' mission to positively impact local ecosystems while beautifying urban spaces.
