Argyle Streets Foremost Liquors Is Moving Down The Block Without Its Iconic Sign

Chicago, ILLocal News

Foremost Liquors is set to relocate from 1040 W. Argyle St. to 1025-27 W. Argyle St. in October, concluding a 45-year tenure at the original site.

This move follows disputes with the landlord that led the family-run business to seek a new environment. The iconic vintage marquee will not accompany the store; the owners intend to sell it to someone who will honor its historical significance. Ald. Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth's ordinance lifted a liquor moratorium on Argyle Street in February, allowing for the establishment of the new location. Business at Foremost Liquors had suffered due to the COVID-19 pandemic and extensive construction on the Red Line's North Branch.

The reopening of the Argyle station in July has increased foot traffic, prompting the Hotzas to feel cautiously optimistic about their future. Ryan Hotza noted that the area is beginning to return to normal, stating, "As long as we have a customer base, we’ll stay in business. " The move represents a significant change for the Hotzas, who have witnessed their neighborhood evolve over the years.
