West Side Alderman, Neighbors Reject Housing Development On Congested Stretch Of Harlem
Alderman Chris Taliaferro and local residents rejected a proposed five-story apartment complex on Harlem Avenue in Austin, which would have added 80 market-rate rental units. At a community meeting, residents expressed strong opposition, citing concerns about parking and crime. Taliaferro highlighted the overwhelming lack of support for the development, stating it must align with community values. He pledged to vote against the project if it proceeds to the City Council. The lot, previously home to a McDonald’s, has been vacant for at least 20 years, with a car wash proposal also failing to materialize.
Some residents suggested alternative developments, such as a library or a veteran’s hall. Taliaferro affirmed the need for responsible projects that enhance the community. The rejection sends a clear message to developers about the importance of community input in planning.
