Miyagi Records DJ School To Celebrate 10th Graduating Class This Weekend
This Saturday, Miyagi Records in Washington Park will celebrate the graduation of its 10th DJ cohort with a daylong party featuring performances by eight students. Each student will showcase their skills through 30- to 45-minute sets, reflecting the techniques learned in the program. The curriculum includes both technical DJing skills, such as beat-matching and audio manipulation, and essential business practices like networking and self-promotion. Hameed Weaver, the education lead, notes that the course promotes a sense of community among aspiring DJs. Future DJ classes will commence in August and October, alongside a new beat-making class starting in September.
The cost for each session is $350, with potential discounts for those in financial need. Graduates who meet specific attendance criteria will also receive a lifetime discount at Miyagi Records. This initiative not only fosters skill development but also strengthens ties within Chicago's vibrant underground music scene.
