South Side Activist To The City Give Us A Bathroom Or Well See You In Court
Tamar Manasseh, founder of Mothers Against Senseless Killings, plans to file a federal lawsuit against the city of Englewood to secure water access for her Peace Academy education center. The center, built from shipping containers, has lacked running water for years, forcing children and volunteers to use portable toilets or rely on neighbors for assistance. Manasseh was informed in 2019 that her structure did not qualify as permanent, thus denying her water access. A recent report highlighting similar challenges faced by community farms prompted her to reevaluate the situation. She has sent a letter to city officials requesting a meeting within ten days to discuss a less-litigious solution.
Manasseh spends approximately $1,500 monthly on bottled water and toilet rentals, which comes from her own funds. The lack of water access has become especially pressing due to climate issues exacerbating heat conditions. Manasseh's relationship with local Alderman William Hall has soured, further complicating her efforts to obtain assistance.
