Queer Radical Fair Returns, Celebrating Acceptance Through Fashion

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Queer Radical Fair will take place at Ping Tom Memorial Park on Thursday from 4:30 to 8:30 p. m. , showcasing the work of 18 youth designers, the largest group in the program's history. This event celebrates the Chicago Public Library’s sixth annual Radical Fit incubator program, which empowers teens to use fashion as a form of personal expression and social activism. Twelve of the designers are part of Radical Fit, while six others come from the Rebirth Warrior Incubator, a program focused on creating gender-nonconforming wearables.

Many designers highlight how the program offers essential affirmation in their lives, particularly amid growing threats to LGBTQ+ and disabled communities. R. Mae, a library arts specialist, underscores the need for spaces that promote creative exploration for teens. The program also emphasizes the importance of self-worth, as expressed by designer Cloud, who stated that the fair has shown them their value. This year’s fair features mentorship from professionals in the field, including Sky Cubacub, founder of Rebirth Garments.

The event aims to foster community and build connections among youth, demonstrating the significant impact of such initiatives.
