Police continue to seek the driver responsible for a fatal hit-and-run in Pilsen, where 22-year-old Marcela Herrera was killed and her fiancé, 21-year-old Mauricio Leyva, was critically injured. The incident occurred at 11:19 p. m. on July 19, when the couple was struck by a dark-colored Dodge Journey as they crossed South Ashland Avenue. The driver fled, leaving behind a broken headlight and potential front-end damage.

Herrera, known for her work in social justice, was heading to meet friends when the accident happened. Community members have organized canvassing efforts, calling for justice and urging anyone with information to come forward. Cook County Crime Stoppers has announced a $1,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest. Fundraisers created in Herrera's memory and for Leyva's recovery have garnered over $38,000 combined. The couple was set to marry on August 21, highlighting the tragic loss felt by family and friends.
