Lost Boyz Inc. Has Helped South Side Kids For 17 Years, But Groups Future Uncertain As Grants Dry Up

Chicago, ILLocal News

Lost Boyz Inc. , a nonprofit focused on sports-based youth development in South Shore, laid off its staff on July 1 but continues operations through volunteers. Executive Director LaVonté Stewart highlighted that the organization is facing a financial crisis and may need to make tough decisions soon. The nonprofit's funding has heavily depended on government grants, many of which are drying up as pandemic-related federal spending ends. In response, Lost Boyz is currently raising funds through GoFundMe to meet immediate financial needs, including staff salaries and program expenses.

The Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority has reduced its funding commitments, with previous grants of over $1. 67 million now expected to decline. Stewart expressed regret over the organization's heavy reliance on state funding, suggesting it may have hindered their long-term sustainability. The urgency for securing new grants and donations is paramount to avoid reverting to a fully volunteer-run model. The organization's future hangs in the balance as it seeks to navigate these financial challenges.
