Late Sculptor Behind Ida B. Wells Light Of Truth National Monument Honored With Ellis Park Plaque
In a heartfelt ceremony, community leaders unveiled a plaque honoring Richard Hunt, the sculptor behind the “Light of Truth” monument in Oakwood. The 20-foot sculpture, dedicated to activist Ida B. Wells, stands at Ellis Park, reflecting the community's commitment to honoring its history. Hunt, a Chicago native, passed away in 2023, and his work was celebrated for its significance to local heritage. The monument features plaques recognizing donors, including day campers who collectively raised $450.
Cecilia Hunt shared emotional memories of her father's artistic journey and the joy of community involvement in the project. Former Alds. Sophia King and Shirley Newsome played vital roles in fundraising efforts for the monument. Hunt's legacy of quiet activism resonates in the sculpture, which incorporates images and quotes from Wells. The dedication highlights ongoing efforts to celebrate Wells's contributions, including the annual Ida B.
