Chicago, ILLocal News

Jussie Smollett announced that Netflix will release a documentary titled “The Truth About Jussie Smollett? ” on August 22, which aims to refute allegations that he staged a hate crime attack in Chicago. The 90-minute film includes previously unreleased footage from the 2019 incident, which Smollett claims corroborates his narrative of being attacked. After being convicted of filing a false police report, the Illinois Supreme Court overturned Smollett's conviction last year, marking a significant legal pivot in his case. As part of a settlement with local authorities, Smollett donated to community organizations, including a recent $10,000 contribution to the Chicago Torture Justice Center.

He stated that the footage was obtained too late to be included in his original trial, expressing frustration over its late arrival to his legal team. The documentary is produced by Raw and directed by Gagan Rehill, with Smollett providing his first interview for a film about his case. Smollett reflected on the challenges he faced in the aftermath of his legal struggles, noting his continued love for Chicago despite the controversy. He emphasized his commitment to using his celebrity status to raise awareness about wrongful convictions and justice reform.
