Proposed Law Would Require All Boaters To Wear Life Vests After Black Yacht Weekend Drowning
Ald. Stephanie Coleman proposed a law requiring all boaters to wear life vests after the drowning of stylist Zahrie Walls. The ordinance would cover all vessel types, imposing fines of up to $500 for violations. Coleman emphasized the importance of safety, citing instances where life jackets saved lives during recent boating events. Chicago Harbor Safety Committee President Mike McElroy praised the measure but pointed out uncertainties regarding enforcement and the type of life jackets mandated.
Current Illinois law only necessitates life vests for children under 13, raising concerns about the safety of adult boaters. The proposal aims to improve safety in high-risk areas like the Playpen, which has seen multiple fatalities in recent years. Coleman’s initiative follows a summer of increased boating activity and incidents, including rescues performed by the U. S. Coast Guard.
As discussions continue, the ordinance may prompt collaboration with agencies like the Coast Guard and local law enforcement to ensure effective implementation.
