Chicago, ILLocal News

NASCAR confirmed it would not host the Chicago Street Race in 2026 but left the door open for a return in 2027. The announcement follows the conclusion of a three-year contract with the city, initiated under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. City officials are exploring dates outside the busy Independence Day weekend to ease law enforcement pressures. This year’s event, which experienced fewer weather-related disruptions than previous years, attracted over 79,000 attendees and generated $128 million in economic impact. Mayor Brandon Johnson's administration praised NASCAR for its commitment to community engagement, particularly regarding STEM education initiatives.

The 2024 race generated an additional $9. 6 million in local and state taxes, highlighting the economic benefits of the event. NASCAR is also considering a race in San Diego for next year, but it's uncertain how this will affect the Chicago event. The city looks forward to resuming discussions for a potential 2027 race, aiming to improve operational efficiencies.
