This Business Incubator Program Has Been Working To Reverse Belmont Cragins Shop Closures

Chicago, ILLocal News

Isabel Cambray opened Cam Studios in Belmont Cragin, joining the Crecer Business Incubator to support local artistry. The incubator, launched by the Northwest Side Community Development Corporation in 2021, aims to revive the neighborhood's economy post-pandemic by providing resources and shared retail space. Cambray's studio is one of three businesses in the 2025 cohort, which also includes Clear Conscience Candles and Galería 88 Artesanías. Participants receive mentorship and can operate from the incubator while paying subsidized rent for up to one year. Makayla Betancourt, owner of Clear Conscience Candles, credits the incubator with helping her business thrive amidst challenges.

The program promotes collaboration, allowing entrepreneurs to manage their businesses alongside full-time jobs. With one-fifth of Belmont Cragin's small businesses closing between 2020 and 2021, the incubator is vital for community recovery. Local leaders hope that these efforts will inspire a vibrant artistic community in Belmont Cragin.
