City Adds 6 More Speed Cameras. Heres Where They Are
Chicago's transportation department announced the installation of six additional speed cameras, bringing the total to 40 for 2025. Fines for speeding in these zones will be set at $35 for 6-10 mph over the limit and $100 for exceeding the limit by 11 mph or more. After a month-long warning period, actual ticket enforcement will begin, allowing drivers to adjust to the new cameras. The cameras are strategically located near schools and parks to bolster safety, with enforcement hours limited to school days and park opening times. The expected revenue from these cameras is included in Mayor Brandon Johnson's budget, aimed at funding police positions related to a federal consent decree.
The initiative follows a policy change in 2021 that lowered the speeding ticket threshold to 6 mph over the limit. Currently, Chicago operates approximately 200 active speed cameras, with a comprehensive list available on the city's data portal. This move illustrates the city's commitment to enhancing traffic safety and accountability.
