Douglass Park Lifeguard Charged With Shooting 2 Teens Had History Of Confrontations, Park District Says

Chicago, ILLocal News

Charles Leto, a 55-year-old former lifeguard, has been charged with murder and attempted murder after shooting two teenagers, killing 15-year-old Marjay Dotson, at Douglass Park on June 26. An internal review by the Chicago Park District revealed that Leto had a history of confrontations with patrons and staff, although these incidents were not formally documented. Following the shooting, the Park District announced plans to improve security at Douglass Park and enhance disciplinary tracking for staff members. Leto was placed on unpaid suspension during the investigation and later resigned, being added to a "do not rehire" list. His attorney stated that Leto had raised safety concerns prior to the shooting, which were acknowledged in the Park District's review.

The incident has led to community calls for a public apology from the Park District and demands for better security measures. Leto had passed all background checks during his hiring in 2023, despite a previous incident involving a police standoff. The Park District's upcoming reforms aim to prevent such tragedies in the future and address community safety concerns.
