A Measure To Opt 2 NW Side Wards Out Of Anti-Gentrification Zone Will Now Go Before Full City Council

Chicago, ILLocal News

Ald. Felix Cardona, Jr. and Ald. Gilbert Villegas proposed an amendment to exclude their wards from the contentious Northwest Side Preservation Ordinance, which aims to combat gentrification. The amendment cleared a significant City Council committee and will be presented for a full council vote.

Ald. Villegas criticized the ordinance as flawed, noting that it did not adequately include key stakeholders during its drafting process. The ordinance’s tenant’s right of first refusal program has caused delays in property sales, complicating the process for homeowners. City officials are actively engaging with real estate stakeholders to address these complications and enhance the program's effectiveness. Both aldermen expressed concerns about tenants' preparedness for homeownership under the current ordinance rules.

A working group has been established to develop resources for tenants regarding their rights under the ordinance. The outcome of the full council vote will be crucial for the future of the ordinance and its impact on the community.
