Montrose Beachs 3 Piping Plover Chicks Have Names And Theyre All Chicago-Themed

Chicago, ILLocal News

Three newly hatched piping plover chicks at Montrose Beach were named Bean, El, and Ferris after a community contest that received 526 entries. Bean represents the Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park, while El symbolizes Chicago's elevated transit system, emphasizing the connection residents feel to the piping plovers. Ferris, chosen for its reference to the Ferris wheel and the classic film "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off," reflects the city’s cultural significance. The contest was organized by conservation groups aiming to highlight Chicago's heritage and diversity. The chicks hatched on June 20, marking the second consecutive summer that parents Imani and Sea Rocket successfully raised offspring at the beach.

Last year, the couple had four eggs, but only one chick survived despite preservation efforts. These initiatives have led to a focused conservation strategy at Montrose Beach, where the natural area was expanded to protect the plovers' nesting grounds. Experts and local fans continue to monitor the piping plover families closely to ensure their survival.
