Chicago Public Schools Lays Off More Than 1,450 Staff
Chicago Public Schools laid off over 1,450 school-based staff, including 432 teachers, in response to a $734 million budget deficit. A Chalkbeat analysis indicated that 57 percent of district-run schools saw position reductions, while 43 percent experienced no change or an increase. Interim CEO Macquline King assured teachers would receive retroactive raises by mid-August. The budget deficit has increased, prompting concerns about further staffing cuts or borrowing options. CPS officials will hold public meetings next week to solicit community feedback on potential budget solutions.
Budget Director Mike Sitkowski acknowledged the district's “tough situation” and emphasized a commitment to student-centered decisions. They plan to adjust staffing levels based on actual student enrollment needs after the academic year begins. Retention pools will be available for some special education staff to address vacancies.
