Aurelios Serves Up New Poperoni Pizza In Honor Of Pope Leo XIV

Chicago, ILLocal News

Aurelio’s Pizza introduced the “Poperoni Pizza” to honor Chicago native Pope Leo XIV, who has a history of dining at the restaurant. This new pizza features a unique layer of “cup and crisp pepperoni” that enhances the traditional pepperoni pizza with added texture and flavor. The restaurant established a “Pope Leo XIV table” in Homewood to celebrate the Pope's connection to the establishment. Though Aurelio’s closed its last Chicago location on May 31, the Poperoni Pizza is available at all other locations, including La Grange and Oakbrook. Born in Bronzeville in 1955, Pope Leo XIV grew up in Dolton and attended local schools, showcasing a deep-rooted connection to the area.

He also studied at the Catholic Theological Union and taught at several Catholic schools in Chicago. His love for local culture is evident, as he is a lifelong White Sox fan who recently engaged with fans at Rate Field. The introduction of this pizza not only highlights the Pope's ties to Chicago but also amplifies the restaurant's community involvement.
