Uprising Theater Cafe Highlighting Palestinian Voices Opens In Avondale After 11-Year Journey

Chicago, ILLocal News

Uprising Theater & Cafe has opened in Avondale, fulfilling a dream 11 years in the making by founder Iymen Chehade. This venue is the first Palestinian American theater to have its own space in the United States, aiming to amplify Palestinian voices and social justice themes. Co-artistic director Maren Rosenberg plans to showcase their play “The Olive Tree” in the fall. The building, which has been in Chehade's family for over 50 years, underwent significant renovations, including a new roof and a cafe area. The cafe serves traditional Palestinian beverages like mint lemonade alongside Middle Eastern pastries, creating a vibrant community hub.

Chehade underlines the importance of the theater in countering the historical dehumanization of Palestinians and promoting equity among other marginalized groups. The theater can accommodate 85-90 patrons, fostering a space for storytelling and artistic expression. Additionally, the cafe will feature local Palestinian artwork, further enriching the cultural landscape of the area.
