How The Shooting Star Collective Is Making Sure Disabled Drag Artists Have A Place To Shine
The Shooting Star Collective, initiated by Orion Hill in April, addresses the accessibility challenges faced by disabled drag performers in Chicago's nightlife. As venues reopened after COVID-19 restrictions, many overlooked accessibility needs, prompting Hill to create this supportive community. The collective has grown to nearly two dozen members, including Shane Fosse, who emphasized the importance of COVID-conscious performances. Hill expressed appreciation for the predominantly disabled membership and the outreach from supportive organizations. Their first event featured a virtual raffle to support the House of the Lorde, an influential Black feminist performance collective.
The collective aims to organize workshops, performance exchanges, and collaborations with other accessibility-focused groups. Additionally, collective members are developing resources for venue owners to create more inclusive environments. This initiative highlights the need for ongoing conversations about accessibility within the arts community.
