Krystal Riveras Family Calls For Independent Investigation Into Officers Death At Hands Of Partner

Chicago, ILLocal News

The family of Krystal Rivera, a Chicago Police officer fatally shot by a fellow officer, is demanding the release of body camera footage from the incident and accountability from the police department. Rivera, 36, was killed during a foot chase on June 5 while pursuing an armed suspect. The family’s attorneys question the decision to have Officer Carlos A. Baker on duty, highlighting his significant disciplinary record. They are also advocating for an independent investigation by the Illinois State Police to ensure transparency.

During a recent news conference, Rivera's mother shared the profound loss she feels, describing her daughter as her confidant and best friend. While the family has not yet filed a lawsuit, they are considering all civil options for justice. The shooting is currently under investigation by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA), which has notified the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. This incident raises serious concerns about police training and supervision in Chicago.
