This South Shore Initiative Aims To Get Neighbors Invested In Projects Along 71st Street

Chicago, ILLocal News

The South Shore Chamber announced the CorridorLive development plan for 71st Street, focusing on fostering local investments and community engagement. The strategy aims to empower residents to take control of commercial developments, with a full plan set to be unveiled at the South Shore Summer Fest on August 24. Key components will include land use strategies, branding guides, and visual concepts for up to six potential redevelopment sites. Approximately 40 residents participated in an open house, sharing feedback on priorities for land redevelopment and storefront improvements. The initiative seeks to revitalize areas with vacant properties and engage local entrepreneurs, addressing long-standing issues of commercial vacancies and absent landlords.

The project builds on historical planning efforts, including the 2022 quality of life plan and previous corridor studies. The South Shore Chamber also collaborates with Community Desk Chicago, which aims to raise $15 million for local real estate investments. This effort reflects a commitment to transforming the neighborhood and enhancing its commercial viability.
