113-Year-Old Morning Star Baptist Church In Bronzeville Is Now A Chicago Landmark
The Chicago City Council unanimously recognized Morning Star Baptist Church as a landmark, acknowledging its historical importance to the African American community. The church, located at 3993 S. King Drive, was established during the Great Migration and has served as a spiritual and community anchor for over a century. Originally constructed in 1912 as a garage, it was transformed into a church by architect Walter Thomas Bailey. Significant renovations occurred 30 years later, led by architects Radcliffe Hunter and Charles E.
Duster, whose grandfather was journalist Ida B. Wells. This landmark status supports efforts to convert abandoned rail lines into the Bronzeville Trail, enhancing tourism in the historically Black area. Church officials could not be reached for comments on the designation. The recognition highlights the importance of preserving historical sites that reflect the community's rich cultural heritage.
Local advocates continue to push for further developments that honor the area's history.
