Will NASCAR Return To Chicago? Aldermen Push For Post-Race Meeting As Contract Ends

Chicago, ILLocal News

NASCAR's Chicago Street Race is set to take place this weekend, but the future of the event is in question as its three-year contract is due to expire. Aldermen have voiced discontent over a lack of communication from the Mayor's Office and are seeking a post-race meeting with NASCAR to discuss the event's impact. They are particularly concerned about the race coinciding with the busy Independence Day weekend and its impact on local residents and businesses. The 2023 race attracted over 79,000 attendees, generating $109 million in economic activity. However, the deal has been criticized for undervaluing public park space and imposing low fees on NASCAR.

The city incurred over $3. 5 million in costs for race preparations, raising concerns about the financial balance. NASCAR's spokesperson stated that discussions regarding the race's future are ongoing, with a focus on executing the upcoming race. The racing company has 90 days post-race to request a contract extension with the Chicago Park District, which remains a point of contention among local officials.
