Burning The Binary From Bonfires To They Beach, Trans Chicagoans Find Summer Joy On The Lake

Chicago, ILLocal News

The inaugural “They Beach” event will take place at Montrose Beach in Chicago on Saturday, welcoming trans and nonbinary individuals to celebrate Pride together. Organized by Gender F–ked Productions, the event aims to foster community and connection for those who may have moved from less accepting environments. Co-organizer Dawn Heilung notes the increasing importance of such gatherings as civil liberties for trans people face threats nationwide. Attendees like James Oetinger, who recently relocated from a conservative area, express gratitude for the opportunity to build a queer community and feel at home. The event follows a prior bonfire gathering that was originally intended as a “They Beach” but had to be adjusted due to cold weather.

Ilya, a drag performer, appreciates the daytime event for providing a space to connect outside of the nightlife scene. The series not only promotes trans joy but also serves as a response to the current political climate that seeks to undermine trans rights. Heilung emphasizes that these gatherings represent a vital aspect of community resilience amid ongoing challenges.
