Baseballs Zany Savannah Bananas Sell Out Sox Park Twice As Fans Clamor For Hottest Ticket In Town

Chicago, ILLocal News

The Savannah Bananas have taken Chicago by storm, selling out Sox Park for two nights with the debut of "Banana Ball," attracting over 182,000 ticket applicants. The games feature unconventional rules that include immediate ejection for bunting and a unique "showdown" extra inning format involving just a pitcher, hitter, and one fielder. Resale tickets on platforms like StubHub have reached prices between $221 and $4,796, while the average face value remained at $40-60. Savannah Bananas spokesman Sam Bauman confirmed that all 81,230 tickets sold out within four hours of their release. Local fan Mike Fraser described the excitement as similar to the demand for "Hamilton," highlighting the event's significance for creating lasting memories around baseball.

This success showcases the Bananas' ability to attract a younger audience, contrasting sharply with the traditional baseball fan demographic, which tends to be older. Sports business expert Marc Ganis noted that the Bananas' model combines entertainment with sports akin to the Harlem Globetrotters, suggesting its potential for longevity. The Bananas have already sold out 17 Major League Baseball stadiums and three football stadiums this year, further solidifying their status as a cultural phenomenon.
