Aldi To Replace Shuttered Whole Foods in River North

Aldi confirmed plans to take over a 25,000-square-foot store at 30 W. Huron St. in River North, previously occupied by Whole Foods until its closure in 2022. The original agreement for the space with Dom’s Kitchen & Market fell through, leaving the location vacant. This new store will mark Aldi's second downtown location in Chicago, joining the existing store at 201 W.

Division St. in Gold Coast. Currently, Aldi operates 32 locations across Chicago, showcasing its growing presence in the region. Additionally, Aldi will expand to the West Loop by 2026, having signed a 15-year lease for a 22,000-square-foot space as part of a new apartment complex development. The River North store is anticipated to serve a vibrant urban community, enhancing grocery access in the area.

Aldi did not respond to inquiries regarding the new location's opening date or specifics. The move aligns with the company's ongoing strategy to expand its footprint in major urban centers.
