The Chicago Department of Transportation is enhancing Milwaukee Avenue in Avondale with significant safety upgrades from Belmont Avenue to Addison Street. These improvements include new concrete protected bike barriers and pedestrian refuge islands designed to enhance pedestrian safety and visibility. Construction began in late May and will wrap up later this summer, as confirmed by spokesperson Erica Schroeder. Recent work involved re-striping the corridor to accommodate bike lanes by shifting parking lanes further from the curb. The new painted bike lanes will connect to nearly completed protected bike lanes on Belmont Avenue, which also features improved pedestrian crossings and floating bus stops.

These changes are part of a broader initiative to promote safer travel for cyclists and pedestrians in the area. The enhancements reflect a growing focus on integrating bike infrastructure within urban settings.
