Created by Chinaka Hodge, the show follows Riri, a genius inventor, as she returns to Chicago after her expulsion from MIT. The series integrates Chicago's iconic sites, such as Navy Pier and DuSable Bridge, highlighting the city's rich architectural history. Filming mainly occurred in Chicago, with a few scenes shot in Atlanta, ensuring an authentic local experience. Marvel CEO Kevin Feige announced the project in 2020, with filming concluding in November 2022.

The production team aimed to represent the vibrancy of Chicago through its diverse settings. Riri's journey reflects both her personal struggles and the broader social issues within the city. The show's location manager, Natasha Parker, helped ground the story in meaningful contexts for local viewers.
