Recreational Vehicle Safety Tips
The State Fire Marshal’s Office stresses fire safety for RV operators in Washington as camping season begins. In 2024, fire agencies recorded 453 fires linked to recreational vehicles, resulting in seven fatalities and over $6 million in property loss. The SFMO outlines essential safety measures, such as installing and testing smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Fire extinguishers rated for Class A-B-C fires should be mounted near exits and cooking areas. Operators must turn off gas appliances while driving and practice escape plans with two exit options.
Additionally, thorough checks of electrical and propane systems are necessary before each trip. Cooking should never be left unattended, and designated cooking areas must be well-ventilated. Taking these precautions can help prevent devastating incidents and ensure a safe camping experience.
