Minor Injuries Result as Fast Flowing French Creek Sweeps Hikers Downstream

Chelan, WALocal News

On April 28, 2025, two 21-year-old hikers were swept downstream while trying to cross a creek on the Icicle Creek Trail near French Creek. RiverCom received a satellite text to 911 message detailing their injuries and exact location. Chelan County deputies and a team of 12 volunteer rescuers hiked 1. 5 miles to reach the hikers, who sustained only minor injuries. Rescuers determined that the creek's heavy runoff made the trail bridge impassable, prompting them to set up a rope system for safe crossing.

The hikers successfully returned to the trailhead around 10:00 PM. Authorities issued a warning about the dangers of fast-flowing water, emphasizing that even six inches can sweep an adult off their feet. The incident highlights the importance of caution during spring runoff season. Local officials continue to advocate for safety awareness among hikers in the area.
