Washington State expands retirement savings options for volunteer firefighters
Governor Bob Ferguson signed House Bill 1156 into law, expanding retirement savings options for volunteer firefighters across Washington state. The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Rep. Mike Steele, passed unanimously in both chambers and will take effect on July 27. It amends the definition of "employee" in the Washington State Deferred Compensation Program to include volunteer firefighters, allowing them to save a portion of their compensation for retirement. Fire Chief Arnold Baker emphasized the bill's potential to help retain volunteers who commit significant time and energy to their communities.
The initiative arose from conversations with fire service leaders seeking better support for volunteer firefighters. Steele noted that the legislation provides a practical solution to enhance recruitment efforts and volunteer retention. The law also ensures that participation in the deferred compensation program will not impact eligibility for other public pension systems. This legislative action underscores the state's commitment to supporting those who serve their communities selflessly.
