Port of Chelan County Responds to Office of the State Treasurer Review of Proposed Malaga Tax Increment Area

Chelan, WALocal News

The Port of Chelan County will vote on the proposed Malaga Tax Increment Area (TIA) on December 9, 2025, aiming to generate $220 million for infrastructure improvements across 3,326 acres. The TIA is designed to finance public improvements by using future property tax revenue from growth in the area. The Port submitted a project analysis report to the Office of the State Treasurer (OST) on August 20, 2025, which returned with six recommendations on November 13, 2025. Of these, four are standard across similar reviews, while two pertain specifically to Malaga's unique circumstances. The Port must incorporate OST's advisory recommendations into its final report before the vote.

Public briefings will be held on November 24 and 25, 2025, to discuss the TIA with community members. The Malaga community is historically underserved, and the new funding aims to address infrastructure needs that current budgets cannot support. The TIA is expected to stimulate development and improve safety and infrastructure in the area.
