Lake Chelan school bond wins majority but fails under state supermajority rule
Lake Chelan voters narrowly supported a $73 million school bond measure, receiving 51. 32% approval with 1,090 votes for and 1,034 against. However, the bond's failure stems from Washington state law, which requires a 60% supermajority for school construction bonds. The proposal aimed to replace the 77-year-old Morgen Owings Elementary School and included upgrades to the middle and high school campuses, enhancing safety and expanding programs. Administrators highlighted the facility's age and inadequate conditions during a recent tour, stressing the mismatch between its design and modern educational needs.
Although the bond did not pass, district officials affirm that the identified needs will continue to guide future planning. Voter turnout was approximately 27%, emphasizing the significance of participation in local elections. The narrow defeat reveals the challenges of securing public investments when majority support is insufficient. The district now faces the task of fostering a larger consensus for future proposals.
