Local veteran honored with a Quilt of Valor
Ed Bleitz received a Quilt of Valor on Oct. 21 during a ceremony in Chelan, Washington, honoring his military service. The event, led by the Quilts of Valor Foundation and local volunteers, recognized Bleitz and the sacrifices of Vietnam veterans. Since its inception in 2003, the foundation has awarded nearly 424,000 quilts, with Washington volunteers distributing over 1,200 in the last year. Bleitz enlisted in the U.
S. Army at 17 and served as an aircraft mechanic, later being honorably discharged in 1964. His post-military life included roles as a pastor and chaplain, showcasing his commitment to service. The ceremony highlighted the need to honor Vietnam veterans, contrasting their experiences with current service members. Tracy Shaw, a leader at the event, reaffirmed the commitment to change the narrative for Vietnam veterans.
Bleitz received a special lapel pin as a symbol of appreciation, along with a Quilts of Valor certificate of recognition.
