DOE Evaluates Impacts of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
The Department of Ecology (DOE) is gathering public feedback on a study that evaluates the potential environmental impacts of sustainable aviation fuel production in Washington. This programmatic environmental impact statement will assess both adverse effects and mitigation strategies, emphasizing the need for public input to determine focus areas. Sustainable aviation fuel, which blends with traditional jet fuel to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is produced from low-carbon sources such as biomass and organic waste. The DOE plans to hold two virtual meetings on October 21 and 22, 2025, to collect public comments, with written submissions accepted until November 5, 2025. The study will help developers and agencies make informed siting and design choices to minimize negative impacts.
Individual projects will still require specific environmental reviews under SEPA regulations. Final findings will be published by June 30, 2027, providing a roadmap for future sustainable aviation fuel initiatives. This initiative underscores Washington's commitment to clean energy and environmental stewardship.
