Regional Fire Districts secure 1.43 million grant to boost volunteer recruitment
Chelan Fire & Rescue has been awarded a $1. 43 million regional SAFER Grant to enhance volunteer firefighter recruitment in four fire districts in North Central Washington. The grant, known as Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response, will fund a shared Recruitment and Retention Coordinator for Chelan County Fire District 7, Fire District 5, Fire District 8, and Douglas County Fire District 4. Each year for the next four years, the program will cover the entire costs for 25 new volunteer firefighters, including training and necessary gear. Chief Brandon Asher described the grant as a significant boost for the region, vital for maintaining emergency response capabilities in small communities.
As emergency calls rise, the declining number of volunteers highlights the urgency of this funding. The SAFER Grant, administered by FEMA, aims to eliminate financial barriers for recruits and ensure adequate staffing. Commissioner Mark Donnell emphasized the importance of collaboration among districts for future preparedness. Community members are encouraged to volunteer and can find more information at chelan7. com.
