CCSO warns of phone scam impersonating officials
The Chelan County Sheriff’s Office has alerted the public to a phone scam where individuals impersonate law enforcement officials to extort money from unsuspecting residents. Several citizens reported receiving calls from scammers posing as Sheriff’s Office employees, specifically impersonating Chief Ryan Moody. The scammers typically claim that the victim failed to appear for jury duty and threaten them with arrest unless they make an immediate payment, often through Bitcoin machines. Sheriff Mike Morrison stressed that legitimate law enforcement will never demand payment or request sensitive personal information via phone. Residents who receive these calls are advised to hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 509-667-6851 to verify any claims.
The Sheriff’s Office aims to prevent further victimization by encouraging the community to remain vigilant. This scam highlights the ongoing issue of fraud targeting individuals through impersonation tactics. Authorities continue to seek ways to educate the public on recognizing and reporting such scams.
